Our heritage

When our founder Mervin Morris opened our first store in San Lorenzo, California, in 1949, he knew he was on to something. This modest family store was an instant success, and today is considered the prototype for the mid-range department store. In fact, Mervin Morris achieved a number of firsts: Mervyns not only was the first to offer customers revolving credit and advertise sales in the newspaper, but also was the first to focus on young families.
